The Factory Says “Zero Liquid Discharge.” Ask About the Tank Before the Evaporator

For an industrial water-treatment supplier, a ZLD mention becomes worth immediate work when a named wastewater stream, operating constraint, sampling action and site date begin to converge.

A factory’s use of zero liquid discharge (ZLD) is not the strongest indication of a supplier project. The stronger combination is a named wastewater stream, a current operating constraint, something the site is prepared to measure, and a date when people can inspect or sample it. Until those details appear, “we need ZLD” may be a policy phrase, an early study or a copied equipment requirement.

ZLD names an endpoint, not a treatment train

Tong and Elimelech’s 2016 peer-reviewed review describes ZLD as a wastewater-management strategy intended to eliminate a liquid waste stream and maximize water-use efficiency. The same review discusses cost, energy demand and solid-waste consequences. That definition matters because it stops sales from treating “ZLD” as the name of one machine.

A site might be discussing water reuse, a discharge restriction, production expansion, brine management or a corporate target. The work could begin with a water balance, sampling, pretreatment study or residual-handling question. An evaporator or crystallizer may eventually be relevant, but the acronym alone cannot choose it.

The first useful question is therefore not “what evaporator size?” It is:

Which process stream is driving the ZLD discussion, and what is happening to that stream now?

That question exposes whether there is a physical problem behind the phrase.

The tank can reveal more than the policy slide

Consider this explicitly illustrative composite message, not a customer record or industry statistic:

“New line now says ZLD. RO reject keeps filling the tank. Volume maybe a few dozen m³/day—need to check. Shutdown next week. Anyone able to visit and sample?”

RO means reverse osmosis, a membrane process that separates water from dissolved material. “RO reject” is the concentrated stream that does not pass through the membrane. In this fragment, its actual flow and chemistry are still unknown; “a few dozen” is the poster’s rough estimate inside the example.

Yet this message is more useful than a polished “seeking ZLD solution” post because it reveals four connected facts:

  1. the problematic stream may be RO concentrate;
  2. tank capacity is creating an operating constraint;
  3. sampling is an accepted next action; and
  4. the shutdown creates a possible access date.

It still does not reveal the factory, country, discharge path, reuse objective, upstream variability, residual destination, budget, decision maker or whether the poster may appoint a supplier.

Regulation does not fill in the missing process data

The U.S. EPA says Effluent Guidelines are national standards for industrial wastewater discharges. They are technology-based: EPA uses the performance of treatment and control technologies when setting standards. Crucially, EPA also says a facility does not have to install the specific technology used as the regulatory basis.

EPA organizes current industrial Effluent Guidelines by industry under 40 CFR Parts 400–471. Direct discharge to surface water and indirect discharge to a publicly owned treatment works can also lead to different regulatory paths. Those facts are why “EPA requires ZLD” is too broad for a supplier record.

The site’s industry, jurisdiction, wastewater stream and discharge or reuse destination must be identified before anyone connects a regulatory statement to equipment scope. A sales lead can justify checking those facts; it cannot convert a group claim into a permit interpretation.

A practical test: stream, constraint, sample, visit

The four-part test is deliberately physical.

Stream: Name the water being discussed—rinse water, cooling-tower blowdown, RO concentrate or another actual stream. “Factory wastewater” is usually too broad.

Constraint: Identify what fails now. A tank fills before the next disposal pickup; conductivity disrupts reuse; a new line exceeds existing capacity; or a permit condition is under review. Do not invent the cause from one symptom.

Sample: Confirm what the site can provide: a current analysis, operating logs, a representative sampling point or a water balance. The supplier cannot responsibly estimate treatment stages from an acronym.

Visit: Find the next dated action—shutdown access, lab sampling, a permit meeting or an expansion design review. “This quarter” is weaker than “sampling is allowed during next Tuesday’s shutdown.”

When all four begin to align, the Signal has a useful next owner even though funding and authority remain unknown.

The strongest counterexample is a site the supplier already knows

Sometimes “ZLD for Line 4” is enough. The supplier may already hold the water analysis, know the discharge permit, understand the existing plant and have an approved site contact. In that case, the missing evidence lives in an authorized account record, not in public Telegram text.

That exception should be documented, not generalized. Attach the current site record and note its date. Old chemistry, production rates or permit conditions can make a familiar acronym misleading.

The opposite case also matters: a long request for “full ZLD design” can stay weak if it contains only copied equipment names and no site stream, sampling owner or visit window.

What should reach the supplier’s morning review

A concise handoff could read:

Possible RO-concentrate capacity problem tied to a new production line. The poster says a tank is filling and mentions a shutdown next week with sampling access. Actual flow, chemistry, site, discharge/reuse objective, residual handling, authority and funding are unconfirmed.

This record tells the water-treatment team why the item moved up: there is a stream, a constraint and a possible physical next step. It does not tell them which system to quote.
